A few minutes ago, while watching Romeny explain why he will vote to remove the president from office, I was reminded of the many Republicans with whom I have profoundly disagreed with over the years, but foolishly believed they were men and women of integrity. President Trump’s time in office and his ability to bully people into submission has shown me that most of the Republicans are cowards in pursuit of power. That, for most, principles mean next to nothing, and politics is a means to power at all costs. Apparently, for many of them, democracy is only a word to use as political cover, and the Constitution, just a piece of paper, to follow when convenient.
I have believed for years now that Romney is a man of conviction and that he takes his responsibilities and declaration to his faith seriously, more than most. Today he proved me right. And while there will continue to be many things on which I think he is wrong and policies he will support (in his speech he said he voted with the president 80% of the time) that I believe go against what it means to walk in the footsteps of Jesus, today I am proud of him.
I can only hope more Republicans will have the courage he displayed. But I already know they will not.
