Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that may cause illness in animals or humans.  In humans, several coronaviruses are known to cause respiratory infections ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The most recently discovered coronavirus has been named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 or (SARS-CoV-2).

“Coronavirus disease 2019” – abbreviated “COVID-19” is the disease caused by (SARS-CoV-2). This new virus and disease were unknown before the outbreak began in Wuhan, China, in December 2019.

ABC News Timeline: Jan 11, 2020, China reports its first death. Japan, South Korea, and Thailand report their first cases on Jan 20th. The first U.S. case is diagnosed on Jan 21st.
